Three engine variants will be available at launch: a diesel in the guise of the C 220 BlueTEC and two gasoline models, C 180 and C 200.

Soon after launch, a new small diesel engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters will be added. Reduced weight, compact design and low specific fuel consumption are said to be among its special merits. Mercedes-Benz added depending on its configuration, the single-stage supercharged four-cylinder engine generates 115 or 136 horsepower.

In total, five four-cylinder gasoline engines, ranging between 156 and 238 horsepower, will also be available. These will include the special C 180 ECO Edition model, which qualifies for efficiency class A as the BlueEFFICIENCY Edition.

A 333 horsepower six-cylinder gasoline engine will be launched later.

Mercedes-Benz will additionally be offering a diesel engine combined with a hybrid module. The C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID with four-cylinder diesel engine and a compact electric motor will generate 204 horsepower from the engine and 27 horsepower (20 kilowatt) from the electric motor. This model will runs on only 3.9 liters of diesel per 100 km/h (60.31 US MPG) in the NEDC combined mode (provisional figure).

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz announced a plug-in hybrid model to follow. No timelines have yet been revealed as to which model will be launched when. Official fuel consumption figures for will be known closer to launch for each version.

The new C-Class has an aluminum hybrid body which is said by Mercedes-Benz to be around 70 kilograms (154.32 pounds) lighter than a conventional steel body. The vehicle’s overall weight is even reduced by around 100 kilograms (220.46 pounds). This has numerous benefits: the lightweight construction of the new C-Class cuts fuel consumption by up to 20 percent without any loss of performance, while at the same time enabling a lower centre of gravity.

Mercedes-Benz explained it achieved this lightweight construction by various measures, including a completely new structural design and the use of an unusually high proportion of aluminum for a mass-produced range. The share of aluminum has risen compared with the predecessor from under 10 percent to almost 50 percent.

With a Cd value of 0.24 for the C 220 BlueTEC ECO, the new C-Class sedan sets, per Mercedes-Benz, a new benchmark in the mid-range segment.
